Gubi – Danish lighting design with tradition and style

Furniture and lights of innovative materials in a timeless and stylish design are distinctive products created by Danish company Gubi.

Gubi lights – international design meets Danish cosiness

Danish furniture and lighting design have a long tradition. The same goes for the design house Gubi that was found in 1967 by the married couple Lisbeth and Gubi Olsen. Besides modern and timeless design furniture, floor lamps, table lamps and pendant lights are popular products of the company. Now the company is in charge of the second generation, Jacob Gubi. The enterprise is headquartered in the Danish capital Copenhagen. From the beginning, Gubi works together with internationally renowned designers and architects. Claus Bonderup, Torsten Thorup and Greta Grossmann are only just a few names devising objects regularly for Gubi. Moreover, Gubi owns the exclusive rights for the production of Bestlite lights by Robert Dudley Best and has been producing design classics whose drafts can be traced back as far as the Eighties and that are still highly demanded due their eternalness. Manufacture occurs only in compliance with aesthetic and ecological policies and by using innovative technologies at the same time. Special attention is paid to the timeless Gubi light design. So, some Gubi models have been produced with great success since the foundation of the company. Thanks to their longevity, uniqueness and quality, Gubi lights and lamps enjoy enormous popularity all over the world.

The pendant light Semi is one of the showpieces. The lamp, a brainchild of Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup, won the Danish industrial design competition already in1968. The flat and curved shape makes the light striking and unostentatious. The enamelled metal shade is manufactured in various colours with matt or high gloss surfaces and is equipped with a textile cable. Together with a mirrored illuminant the Semi spreads an atmospheric light. It unites a cosy ambience with clear, modern design and can therefore be combined in a variety of ways. Since many years, this pendant light can be been in public places, offices and the living area.

Cobra ” is a further classic among Gubi lights. It’s both a floor and table light , designed by Greta Magnusson in the year 1950. The light owes its name to its appearance and high flexibility. In 1950, the light has awarded the Good Design Award by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and can be admired there ever since. A tube-shaped light arm which may be bent and turned flexibly is located on a heavy and solid base made of cast iron. The shade of varnished metal is completely turnable und so creates – as you wish – a direct, zonal light or indirect lighting. Grashopper is the name of another floor lamp made by Gubi, classically designed by Greta Grossmann in 1947. The name of the light comes from the filigree shaped, three-leg steel tube stand and the curved shape of the light arm. The Grashopper’s light can be directed individually thanks to its flexibly adjustable light arm.

Gubi designs harmonious connections between light and design. Known designers and architects create lights and furniture fur Gubi, the traditional Danish design manufacture.
