Oligo – innovative design “made in Germany”

Oligo based in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Hennef has been manufacturing functional and elegant lights that stand out for their high-quality materials and high quality standards for more than 25 years now. Founded by Ralf Keferstein in 1987, the company quickly made a name for itself as a manufacturer of excellent individual lights as well as lighting systems that were mostly made of glass and aluminium. The design language of the light sources is based on the simple and ingenious principle of reduction which is also reflected in the name of this design firm: “oligo” is a Greek prefix that means “few” or “little”. The German light manufacturer equallcy reverts to the know-how of the Oligo factory design team as well as of the company

founder Ralf Keferstein. The result of this  division of work are classic and timelessly elegant lighting objects such as Trofeo or Grace. However, Oligo also commissions external designers: Tom Allemeier, a designer at BMW, and Christoph Kügler together created the delicate light fixture Braccino.

True to the company’s motto “feel the light”, Oligo designed lighting objects that impress by a combination of precise functionality and timeless visual appearance. An example for this approach is the Trinity which is based on a sophisticated lighting concept: its head consists of three separate LED modules that can be switched on and off as well as be aligned

independently of one another. This is beneficial as it allows you to direct the light to wherever it is required. Be it zone lighting for the table or indirect ambient lighting, the Trinity is able to fulfil a number of lighting tasks. A further example for the innovative design by Oligo is Gatsby Fine. The tasteful pendant light made of chrome-plated aluminium is provided with an integrated touch dimmer that allows the brightness to be adjusted to suit your personal requirements. Simply touching the cable below the counterweight shall suffice.

Oligo: innovative technology “made in Germany”

Besides the elegant and timeless design language, the light fixtures by Oligo particularly stand out for their high-quality workmanship. For this purpose, the products are subject to an internal quality check that became part of the company’s philosophy. It ensures a consistent quality of the products manufactured, which is particularly important in the area of LED lighting. During the manufacturing process of its LED lights Oligo attaches particular importance to exact “binning”. This means that the light-emitting diodes with a similar light colour and intensity are grouped together and subsequently fitted in the luminaires. This ensures a

constant light quality. Moreover, the high standards applied during this procedure offer a further benefit: even many years later an adequate replacement for a failed illuminant can be provided so that an unchanged light impression is maintained. For this reason, LED lights like the Just A Little or the Trinity shine in a uniform, excellent light.

However, the willingness to innovate as well as the commitment to high quality do not yet stop here: Oligo developed an intuitive gesture control for the Grace light family. This means that the LED versions of this series can be dimmed and switched on and off

without having to actually touch the light. This is enabled by means of an integrated sensor that is able to recognise the direction and the position of the hand within an approximately 10 cm large area below and above the light fixture. This means that the light system can be operated by means of a simple gesture. In order to dim the light it is sufficient to hold your hand for a moment within the area of the sensor and to wait until the desired light intensity has been achieved. For this practical invention, Oligo received the Plus X Award for innovation and operating comfort.

Award-winning lights

In its now more than 25-year long company history Oligo won many awards and prizes. These include the Red Dot Award and the iF Design Award. One of the first award-winning

lights of the North Rhine-Westphalian manufacturer is the Pull-It, a pendant light by the company founder Ralf Keferstein. It won the iF Design Award in 1998 and stands out for a classic design

language with its cone-shaped lampshade forming a harmonious unit with the cylindrical counterweight. Further successful light series are Gatsby and Grace.
